Policy and regulation

FINMA actively participates in the activities of a number of international standard-setting bodies and makes regular contributions to their work with a view to representing Swiss interests in the shaping of developments at international level.

International standards do not have direct legal force, but complying with them and/or transposing them into national law can be crucial for the financial centre's reputation. Furthermore, compliance with international standards is often a minimum requirement for acquiring or maintaining access to foreign markets. Playing an active role in international standard-setting bodies enables FINMA to influence the international regulatory framework and represent Switzerland’s supervisory interests.
