Monica Mächler, Director
Monica Mächler has been Director of the Federal Office of Private Insurance FOPI since 1 January 2007.
Monica Mächler (born 1956) graduated in 1980 from the Faculty of Law and Political Economics at the University of Zurich. She received her doctorate in 1984 with a thesis on «Vertragsgültigkeit und drittstaatliche Eingriffsnormen» and obtained her admission to the bar in Zurich the following year. From 1985 to 1990, she worked in a Zurich law office with a focus on banking and business law. In 1990, she joined the Zurich Insurance Company as a corporate legal advisor. She assumed the function of Group General Counsel of Zurich Group and Head of the Secretariat of the Board of Directors in 1999. Monica Mächler became a member of the extended group management in 2001.
Ms. Mächler was a member of several expert commissions of the Confederation such as the Zimmerli Commission on implementation of integrated financial supervision legislation, the Zufferey Commission on financial market supervision, and the Schnyder Commission on revision of the Insurance Supervision Act. She is a lecturer for post-graduate studies in International Business Law at the University of Zurich, and she has published numerous articles on current issues of insurance and financial market law as well as of international private law.
