Rupert Schaefer has decided to leave the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA on 31 August 2022. The current head of the Recovery and Resolution division will take on the role of Executive Director of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority
BaFin in Germany from 1 November 2022.
Rupert Schaefer has led the Recovery and Resolution division since March 2020 and also represented FINMA in international fora. The 42-year-old lawyer has been a member of the Executive Board since 2015, initially leading the Strategic Services division. Between 2013 and 2015 he led the International Affairs team (cf. CV and photo).
FINMA’s CEO, Urban Angehrn, says: “I thank Rupert Schaefer for his many years of valuable work for FINMA. He has shaped and developed the Strategic Services division and most recently the Recovery and Resolution division with his dedication and commitment, his excellent strategic skills and his awareness of what is feasible. I very much regret his decision to leave FINMA. I wish him every success for his new role at BaFin and for the future.”
Rupert Schaefer will continue to fulfil his role at FINMA until 31 August 2022. FINMA will announce his successor in due course.
